Justia Profile

Throughout his legal career of over 40 years, Mr. Clarke’s practice has focused primarily on civil litigation. He has served as lead counsel in approximately 100 civil jury trials to verdict, as well as innumerable court trials, arbitrations and mediations involving a wide array of legal issues. Additionally, Mr. Clarke has served as a neutral arbitrator or mediator in some 400 Superior Court cases and has taught arbitration, mediation, and other alternative dispute resolution processes as an Adjunct Professor at both Southwestern Law School and Pepperdine University School of Law. Mr. Clarke has been a member of the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) since 1975, and is rated “AV Preeminent”, the highest rating given by the Martindale-Hubbell peer review rating process for legal competence and ethics.

While attending college and law school, Mr. Clarke was employed full time with Title Insurance and Trust Company in a variety of positions from 1964 until his admission to the California State Bar in January of 1972. Upon admission to the Bar, Mr. Clarke joined a Los Angeles civil litigation law firm, Spray, Gould & Bowers, as an associate attorney, becoming a partner with the firm in 1976.

In 1981, Mr. Clarke co-founded the law firm of Knapp, Petersen & Clarke. In addition to his continuing litigation practice, Mr. Clarke served as the Managing Partner of Knapp, Petersen & Clarke from its inception until 1993, during which time the firm grew in size to more than 60 attorneys. He continued his litigation practice until retiring from the firm in 1995, thereafter transitioning his law practice to Alternative Dispute Resolution and serving as a neutral arbitrator and mediator.

Continuing his practice as neutral arbitrator and mediator, Mr. Clarke also formally studied dispute resolution at Pepperdine University School of Law, receiving his Master’s Degree in Dispute Resolution from the law school in 1999. Mr. Clarke was appointed an Adjunct Professor at Southwestern Law School in 1999, teaching alternative dispute resolution and client counseling until 2003, and periodically thereafter. He also taught alternative dispute resolution as an Adjunct Professor at Pepperdine University School of Law from 2001 to 2003.

Missing the challenges and rewards of representing clients, in 2003 Mr. Clarke returned to the private practice of law, again with a focus on civil litigation. Although he has continued to serve as a neutral arbitrator or mediator, his primary practice to the present time is representing clients in real estate and business disputes and litigation.
